1998 Career Exploration Day
Co-Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Madison
and Madison Chamber of Commerce

On January 29, 1998, the Rotary Club of Madison and Madison Chamber of Commerce co-sponsored a “Career Exploration Day” in conjunction with the Board of Education in both the towns of Madison (Daniel Hand High School) and Clinton (The Morgan School). The program, which is part of the national “School to Career” initiative included both “job shadowing” and career workshops for high school juniors and seniors, was initiated as an effort on behalf of both organizations to provide students with on hands vocational experience within the community. An added benefit was to introduce students to local business people to foster community relations. The program also provided students with the opportunity to learn more about the local civic organizations and meet community leaders. Twenty-three students and twenty businesses participated directly in the program. Business-people who volunteered were Rotary and Chamber members, many of which are involved in both organizations.

The planning for this event began in September with meetings between Rotary and Chamber members and the Career Specialist for the two high schools. Volunteers wre solicited. Specific criteria for students were developed. Members of the committee then “matched” students with volunteers based on career interests. Workshop topics were selected. Materials were prepared for both students and business people providing each with guidelines for shadowing. Businesses also provided brief “profiles” for the students. Two career specialist professionals within the community volunteered to be workshop facilitators. A former Daniel Hand High School graduate (and recipient of a Rotary scholarship) was the keynote speaker at the Rotary Club luncheon, to which all participants were invited, and spoke about his transition from high school to college.

The full day program (8:00 - 4:00) began with an informal breakfast and “warm-up” session at a local town facility to introduce the day and allow the participants to meet with the selected students at their businesses. The business partners then escorted the students to the Rotary Club meeting. Following the luncheon, the students were transported to the town facility and participated in two interactive workshops relating to career choices and issues.

Feedback from the program was extremely positive. The event was instrumental in the school systems’ award of grant funding for continued “School to Career” programming. A student who participated in the program was offered part-time employment with his “business partner”. The same student also went on to apply for and subsequently be awarded scholarships from both the Chamber of Commerce and Madison Rotary Club.
